Top 5 things to include on your wedding invitations
Planning your wedding invitations is exciting, but with so many little details to juggle, it’s surprisingly easy to overlook the basics. And if you do, chances are you’ll end up with dozens of “just checking…” messages from your guests. To save you the inbox headache, here are the top five things every wedding invitation must include (plus a couple of optional extras).
1. Your Names (obviously!)
Make it clear who’s tying the knot by including both of your first and last names. It might sound unnecessary, but trust me, you’re not the only Sarah & Thomas living on someone’s fridge door. Full names remove any doubt and make your stationery feel timeless.
2. Date & Start Time
This one’s non-negotiable: your guests need to know when to show up. Always include the day of the week, the date, and the ceremony start time. We strongly suggest to add 15 minutes to the start time to allow for the late stragglers and have everyone seated in time for the actual start time. (No one wants to be the person sneaking in late!)
3. Location
The “where” is just as important as the “when.” Include your ceremony venue, and if your reception is in a different location, list that too. Save detailed parking instructions or directions for your details card or wedding website. Your invitation itself should stay clean and elegant.
4. RSVP Details
Let your guests know how and by when you’d like them to respond. Whether it’s by email, phone, your wedding website, or a traditional reply card, make sure it’s crystal clear. This small detail makes managing your guest list much smoother. With Joy offers beautiful wedding websites for no cost, and keeps your RSVPs all in one place.
5. Dress Code
Guests love guidance on what to wear. A simple note such as black tie, cocktail, or garden party removes any guesswork and helps everyone feel comfortable (and photo-ready!).
Optional Extras
Depending on your style and traditions, you may also want to include your parents’ names. This is common if parents are hosting or contributing financially, or in some cultures as a sign of respect.
